Active Students & Adults
Programs for students and adults ages 18 and older, take place autumn, winter, and spring quarters. The current program schedule is posted to the right.
Fees & Classes
$44 per person; $59 for non-members
Unless otherwise noted, classes include seven 45-minute sessions
Ballroom
Ballroom dancing's popularity has exploded and now is your chance to try it out. This class is a great opportunity for couples to have fun and be active together. Participants will learn lead and follow techniques, perform basic variations of American style smooth and Latin social dances, develop the ability to identify the rhythms of various social dances, maintain the "line of dance," and learn to negotiate space on the dance floor.
Basketball Open Gym
The gymnasium at Jesse Owens North will be open just for the 40 and over crowd to enjoy open recreational play. This program will be free for Recreational Sports members, and $59 for non-members. All participants must still register for this program so that we can limit the number of participants to maximize playing time.
Bouldering and Rock Climbing
If you are looking for a great way to build strength and flexibility and you are up for a little adventure, join us in the Bouldering and Rock Climbing classes for Active Students & Adults. Sessions will progress through fundamental climbing skills, including: learning basic terminology, using equipment, understanding safety, spotting, moving on the wall, and finding routes.
Golf - Beginning & Intermediate
Participants will learn basic golf skills and etiquette at the RPAC Golf Area. Beginners will learn grip, stance, swing, club selection, and various types of shots. Intermediate classes will focus on stroke improvement. Participants should bring their own clubs (including driver, putter, and at least one iron). A limited number of sets are available for Recreational Sports members to check out at the Sport Shop. Golf balls will be provided. Beginner and intermediate classes will be offered.
Tennis - Beginning & Intermediate
Participants will progress through fundamental tennis skills including: learning proper stance and grip, preparing to hit forehand and backhand ground strokes, serving, volleying, using the forehand lob, backhand lob, and forehand/backhand volley. Participants must provide their own racquet and one can of tennis balls. Beginner and intermediate classes will be offered.
Swimming - Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced
Participants will learn swimming fundamentals including: water adjustment, flutter kicking, breathing coordination, arm action for the front crawl, and elementary backstroke. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced adult level classes are available.
Weight Training
Participants will learn the fundamentals of strength training and conditioning from our Rec Sports personal trainers. The class includes an introduction to the workout equipment at the RPAC and the chance to develop a workout regimen with age and conditioning goals in mind. All activities will be age and ability appropriate. This class is designed to be repeated each quarter to encourage ongoing participation.
Lifeguard Training
This course prepares candidates to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to aquatic emergencies and prevent drowning and other incidents. After successful completion of the course participants will receive the following certifications: Lifeguard Training (3 years), First Aid (3 years), Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for The Professional Rescuer (2 years) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) (1 year). Please see document at the top of the page for more information. Fees include instruction, facilities, and materials. This class is offered during fall quarter, spring quarter, and immediately following spring quarter.
Refunds: Should you need to cancel a Lifeguard Training class you may do so up to 2 weeks before the start of the class. Cancellations and refund requests must be made in writing to the program director at least 2 weeks prior to the start of the class and you will receive a refund, less the $30 administrative fee. After that deadline you will receive a refund less the cost of materials (approximately $60) and the $30 administrative fee.
