About Fitness Services
We have what you want...
We have development. Our instructors and trainers are developed out of a genuine love for health and fitness. They want to share their passion with the university community. All instructors are university students, faculty, or staff, and are in-house trained in exercise science principles, leadership, and customer service. No previous experience is necessary. An initial 50-hour training program, theory and practice, is required for all instructors and trainers. Continuing education sessions are offered year-round for staff members to cultivate deeper understandings of their practices as well as to gain skills in new content areas, such as, Pilates, yoga, indoor cycling, water aerobics, and kickboxing, just to name a few. Our instructors’ progress is closely monitored to ensure positive growth for both the instructors, and equally as important, to ensure growth and development of our participants.
We have camaraderie. Working out with a friend adds support and encouragement to the sometimes-monotonous duty of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Try working out with hundreds! Our group exercise classes, circuit training sessions, and even group personal training sessions are excellent ways to add variety to your established workouts, and learn something new. If you are new to working out or returning to the scene, group exercise is a wonderful starting point. All levels and varieties of sessions are offered. Bring a friend or meet a friend. Just be prepared to sweat!
We have tradition. Started in 1983, Fitness Services grew out Elizabeth Davis’ (now associate director for non-competitive programs) desire to offer cutting-edge services to students at a time when aerobics was just making the cultural scene. Packing the Horseshoe with hundreds of students once a year and packing the Larkins Hall gyms weekly became the norm. At this time, the innovative foundation of our still current in-house instructor training program was set. Over time the program, which was once very simply aerobics in nature, has grown into one of the nation’s largest and most recognized fitness programs. Offering an array of fitness opportunities to men and woman, personal or group, Fitness Services has developed, and we proudly offer that to you.
Above all, we have FUN!
